About the Play

Tony and Greg, who have been together for over 5 years. While their relationship is far from typical, they seem to have their love all figured out. They’re in a committed relationship and they love each other dearly, but there has always been room in their relationship for other people to pass through -- as long as that’s all they’re doing. Their only rule is they don’t sleep with the same man more than once or fall in love with their conquests. But when the undeniably attractive Robert becomes a fixture in their lives, it will test their relationship and their love as everything they thought they knew about each other is thrown into jeopardy. Coming Clean is a fresh, sharp and funny look at love, relationships and fidelity. From the writer of the landmark My Night With Reg comes this compelling, funny and thought-provoking play.

Warning: this production contains reference to sexual assault and homophobia.

This play contains scenes of an intimate nature, including nudity and simulated intercourse.

Note on the nudity:

The only character required to appear naked is Robert. Although nudity is stated in the script, please don’t let this put you off auditioning. This can be discussed and workshopped with the actor cast – and can be removed if needs be. Please contact me to discuss further what is required.

Characters

Tony - Tony is a frustrated aspiring writer; he has been in a relationship with Greg for five years. Tony is outgoing and confident; he shamelessly flirts with Robert. Initially happy with his and Greg’s arrangement, Tony’s view on their relationship changes and his mix of hurt, wounded pride and social embarrassment is revealed when he discovers Greg and Robert’s affair. (Please note – this character has to simulate a “blowjob” on stage.) 20s-30s

Greg - An author, academic and teacher from New York; he has been in a relationship with Tony for five years. He is work-orientated, serious and can’t tell a joke! He disapproves of Tony and William’s friendship as he believes William is a bad influence on Tony. Initially, he is infuriated by every move Robert makes, but ends up falling in love with him. NewYork/American accent required. 30s-40s

Robert - An aspiring actor who has taken a job as a cleaner and cook for dinner parties. Initially shy and awkward, he starts to come out of his shell as the play progresses. Whilst young and apparently fairly naive, Robert is erudite and educated and, although Greg initially, doesn’t seem keen on him, he fits in well with the household. Perhaps too well! (Please note – this character appears naked for the opening of Scene 6. For more information about what is involved, please don’t hesitate to contact me!). 20s

William - William is Tony’s flamboyant best friend and total ‘scene queen’. He is camp and over-the-top (he is the comic relief in the play) – he enjoys going to the discos and cruising. He acts as Tony’s confidante and advisor. William becomes the victim of sexual assault – after being beaten up by “a bit of rough trade”.  William is from Bradford. Northern accent required. (May double up with Jürgen). 30s-40s

Jürgen - A one-night stand Tony brings home. Jürgen is a leather-clad ‘bit of rough’ from Hamburg. He speaks German and broken English. German accent required. (Please note – this character only appears in the final scene of the play – may double up with William). 30s-40s
