About the Play

Sylvia is returning home, by obligation, for a flying visit. Anya, her mother, is dying and her sister Ray is Anya’s main carer. The atmosphere in the house, already fraught with years’ worth of bitterness and miscommunication, is further intensified by the well-meaning arrival of Ray’s best friend Callum, who has known both sisters since school. The play buzzes with anger and missed opportunities, but also with dark comedy and the deep, desperate love of people who cannot seem to be in the same place at the time.

The play uses music and movement as well as dialogue but please do not worry, it is not necessarily ‘dance’ and will not be involved in the audition process!

Characters

Ray A nurse. She plugs the holes and smothers the fear of her own life by caring for her sick mother. She has a deep but difficult bond with Sylvia who she feels more or less abandoned her and the family. Her only real friend is Callum with whom she has a joyful but complex relationship. 30s

Sylvia The older of the two sisters and a successful concert pianist. Her and Ray’s upbringings were very different due to their father’s nurturing of her prodigious talent at the expense of most other life skills and experiences. She is outwardly calm and a little cold. 30s

Anya The girls’ Mother. Pitiable in many ways but also pretty passive aggressive. Very frail and feels she has been short-changed by her eldest, and by her husband (deceased).  50’s/60’s

Callum Ray’s friend. Supportive, charming, insightful but also a bit of a lost soul. Afraid and self-deprecating.  30s
